BANGKOK - Buildings smoldered(闷烧) across central Bangkok(曼谷) early Thursday and troops exchanged sporadic(偶发的) fire with pockets of holdouts(零星抵抗) a day after the army routed(规整……的路线) anti-government protesters(抗议者) in a push to end Thailand's deadliest political violence in nearly 20 years.
The government quelled(结束，镇压) most of the violence in the battered(弄垮了的) Thai capital but not the underlying(潜在的) political divisions that caused it, and unrest(动乱) spread to provinces in the north and northeast.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva(泰国总理阿比希) imposed a nighttime curfew(宵禁) in the capital and 23 other provinces and said his government would restore calm. Although leaders of the Red Shirt demonstrators surrendered, sporadic clashes(交锋) between troops and remaining protesters continued Thursday morning.
